CLASS DESCRIPTION
Military and Veteran Employment Expo (MVEE) Orientation: This is a 20 minute orientation that will be offered once in the morning and once in the afternoon. This class will give you some background information and importance of this event and explain the all the classes and their purpose. We encourage you to start of with this class first so that we can ensure all your questions are answered.
Work It! Working A Job Fair: Just showing up and dropping off resumes doesn't work at today's job fairs. Believe it or not there is a technique to working a job fair so that you can make the experience effective for you and put you a head of your competition. In this class learn how to catch the eye of your future Employer and simply stand out!
Express Yourself: Resume Writing for the Private Sector (Instructional and Lab): It can be a challenge to translate the military lingo within your resume to a language the hiring authority can understand. This class will cover the four types of resumes: chronological, functional, combination and target. Teaching the participants to take military experience and translate it into civilian lingo. Showing the participants various ways to write an awesome resume starting with an effective objective statement and continuing on with powerful action words that best describe their talents and skills. With a computer assigned this will be a hand on experience! For those who already have a resume that may need a few tweaks, feel free to bring it in.
This Mission Is Not Impossible; Federal Resume Writing (Instructional and Lab): Applying for a Federal job is not an easy task even for the most skilled job seeker. Our instructors will show you ways to explore the Federal job posting website and point out information within the job description that will help ease the application process. This information is in invaluable so don't miss out. With a computer provided this class will be hands on experience!
To Do or Not To Do During an Interview: Knowing that an interview has been scheduled brings about anxiety for many of us! No worries, that is, if you are prepared. We will give you pointers on how to prepare a few days before the interview as well as the very moment you actually step into the interview. We will discuss the logic behind the questions asked, address those difficult questions that you may face at the interview and show you the importance of developing stories to tell that speaks about your experience in a story like format. Replace anxiety with confidence and you will win the over!
Today's Tools to Market Yourself; Social Media Networking (Instructional and Lab): Using the social media networks such as Linked In and Twitter can be just as effective in landing a job as the job websites themselves! We will explain how these social networks can be beneficial to you, what to and what not to place on your social network page and with a computer provided we will get you started on today's modern way of networking
There is No Other Like Me: Personal Branding: McDonalds has the Golden Arches, Nike has the Swoosh and Geico has the Gecko! Why? Because BRANDING is an effective marketing strategy! They created a symbol, character or name that is quickly identified as the product of choice, WORLDWIDE! It takes more that getting your future employer to choose you over the competition, you want them to see you as the only one that provides a solution to their business problems. Let this class help you identify your skills and talents and then show you how to personally brand them in a way that the employer only see's you as their product of choice.
No It's Not Speed Dating! It's Speed Networking: Join us for a fast paced fun way to meet as many professionals as possible and receive constructive feedback on your 30 second commercial. We have great community professionals from a variety of industries who have volunteered to participate in our Speed Networking events on May 15 & 16. The Speed Networking event will allow you to select individuals that you would like to spend more time speaking with during the mentor luncheon or during a one-on-one session. Don't delay sign-up today for this once a year opportunity to meet several mentors that won't be available at the Expo on May 17th.
It's All About Who You Know; Employer Connection Panel: This session will give attendees the opportunity to hear from employers within various fields on topics such as what they are looking for in employees, what types of certifications are needed, growth within their field, and what they are looking for in a resume. Hear it from the experts who deal with resumes on a daily basis. Share, Learn and Connect. Many employers recognize the outstanding skills, motivation and work ethic of the military culture. This is for all transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses. Many employers have developed programs for military job seekers, and want to SHARE these opportunities directly with YOU! Come to LEARN by catching each 5 minute presentation of what they have to offer. Then CONNECT by taking an opportunity to visit with each representative.
Brown Bag Mentor Luncheon: Mentor's will lead the discussion at the lunch. This is a unique opportunity to sit with a mentor and enjoy your lunch while you delve deeper into discussion with the mentor regarding the private sector and how military members, Veterans and their spouses can make a smooth transition. Don't delay sign-up today for this once a year opportunity to meet several mentors that won't be available at the Expo on May 17th.
Note: Lunch is not provided for mentors or Expo participants. Pikes Peak Community College has a café or you may bring a brown bag lunch.
